Why words, not lists

A kanji sounds different in every word.

Most kanji have more than one reading, and the word decides which one you say. Learn 生 on its own and you have a meaning and a list of sounds; learn it in words and you know how to say each one.

  • 先生せんせい teacher
  • 生きるいきる to live
  • 生まれるうまれる to be born
Three words from Misu’s course, three readings of 生.

Kanji

How many kanji do I need to know?

Japan’s official list of everyday kanji, the jōyō kanji, has 2,136. You don’t need them all to start: the 1,500 most common words in Misu’s course use 889, and those come up again and again.

What is the best way to learn kanji?

In words, with their readings. On its own a kanji can have several readings; in a word it has one, so you learn the sound, the meaning and the kanji together, and the kanji build up as your words do.

Should I learn hiragana before kanji?

Yes. Kanji readings are written in hiragana, so learn hiragana and katakana first. Together they take a week or two.

See the hiragana chart

Do these flashcards teach stroke order?

No. They teach each kanji as part of a word you can use: how it’s read, what it means and how it sounds.

Are these kanji flashcards free?

Yes, every lesson here, with no account. In Misu, the same words are beautiful flashcards with pictures and examples, and FSRS brings each one back right before you’d forget it.
